Aeterne lucis conditor,
lux ipse totus et dies,
noctem nec ullam sentiens
natura lucis perpeti,
Iam cedit pallens proximo
diei nox adventui,
obtundens lumen siderum
adest et clarus lucifer,
Iam stratis laeti surgimus
grates canentes et tuas,
quod caecam noctem vicerit
revectans rursus sol diem.
Te nunc, ne carnis gaudia
blandis subrepant aestibus,
dolis ne cedat saeculi
mens nostra, sancte, quaesumus.
Ira ne rixas provocet,
gulam ne venter incitet,
opum pervertat ne famis,
turpis ne luxus occupet.
Sed firma mente sobrii,
casto manentes corpore
totum fideli spiritu
Christo ducamus hunc diem.
Praesta, Pater piissime,
Patrique compar Unice,
cum Spiritu Paraclito
regnans per omne seculum. Amen.
Eternal maker of the light,
True light itself and perfect day,
The light by nature infinite,
Not knowing night in any way.
The night grows pale, and yields its place
To morning and the coming day;
The brightness of the morning star
Makes other starlight fade away.
Now from our beds we gladly rise;
We sing our thanks and we adore,
For sun has conquered sightless night,
Returning light and day once more.
We pray, lest carnal joys creep in,
To tempt us with alluring heat;
O Holy One, let not our soul
Surrender to the world’s deceit.
Let not the stomach rouse desire;
Do not let anger lead to strife;
Nor foul indulgence take control,
Nor lust for riches rule our life.
But sober, grave, with firm intent,
And chaste in body sure to stay,
In spirit faithful, let us use
Our time for Christ throughout this day.
Most gracious Father, only Son,
And Comforter, the Three-in-One;
Source of all blessing, grant our plea,
Who live and reign eternally. Amen.
