Deus, qui claro lumine
diem fecisti, Domine,
tuam rogamus gloriam
dum pronus dies volvitur.
Iam sol urgente vespero
occasum suum graditur,
mundum concludens tenebris,
suum observans ordinem.
Tu vero, excelse Domine,
precantes tuos famulos
diurno lassos opere
ne sinas umbris opprimi.
Ut non fuscatis mentibus
dies abscedat saeculi,
sed tua tecti gratia
cernamus lucem prosperam.
Praesta, Pater piissime,
Patrique compar Unice,
cum Spiritu Paraclito
regnans per omne saeculum. Amen.
O God, who made the day so bright,
O Lord, who said, “Let there be light!”
As day goes on its downward way
We praise your glory as we pray.
The sun, as ev’ning presses on,
Goes west until its light is gone,
The world in darkness to enclose,
Observing nature’s law, it goes.
But you, Most High, the Lord of all,
Protect your servants as they call,
Worn out by daily toil and stress,
And let no shade their souls oppress.
As this world’s day from us departs
Uphold us with undarkened hearts;
Protected by your grace, we pray
To see the joyful dawn of day.
Most gracious Father, only Son,
And Comforter, the Three-in-One;
Source of all blessing, grant our plea,
Who live and reign eternally. Amen.
